Review: The Walking Dead, Vol 3: Safety Behind Bars

THE WALKING DEAD, VOL 3: SAFETY BEHIND BARS by Robert Kirkman

In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally start living.

Date Read: July 3rd 2012
Page Count: 136
Series: The Walking Dead - Book 3 of 17

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book in the Walking Dead series. There's lots of drama and action in this one that makes it easy to keep your attention. This was a great read. Something else I like about this series is the cover art, I love how there is always a focal scene and then a mob of zombies overlaying the picture at the bottom. Very cool. I'll continue reading this series. :)

Favorite Quotes:
★ Dale ~ “Yeah, hopefully it's just full of flesh eating monsters and our baked beans are still intact in there. If someone ha said last year that I would ever utter that line out loud... I'd still be laughing now.”
★ Rick ~ “You jogging through the RV to come out here and vomit is our new wake-up call.”
★ Tyreese ~ “Oh my God. I live in a fort. My ten year-old self would have the biggest boner over living in this place.”
★ Tyreese ~ “If we're going to start a new life here--try to reestablish society--we need to have rules for this. We need to all decide what we do. What do we do?”
Rick ~ “You kill? You die. It's as simple as that.”
★ How many hours are in a day when you don't spend half of them watching television?
When is the last time any of us REALLY worked to get something we wanted?
How long has it been since any of us really NEEDED something that we WANTED?
The world we knew is gone.
The world of commerce and frivolous necessity has been replaced by a world of survival and responsibility.
An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe causing the dead to rise and feed on the living.
In a matter of months society has crumbled.
No government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV.
In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally start living. (Back Cover)

Review: The Walking Dead, Vol 2: Miles Behind Us

THE WALKING DEAD, VOL 2: MILES BEHIND US by Robert Kirkman

Date Read: July 3rd 2012
Page Count: 132
Series: The Walking Dead - Book 2 of 17

My Thoughts:
I definitely enjoyed this more than the first one, and since I have a ton more signed out from the library I will go right onto the next book. I'm genuinely interested in seeing what happens next. Volume 2 of this series turned out to be a solid read with drama, ups and downs, and lots of assorted conflicts. I'd recommend this one if the subject matter (surviving in a world overrun with zombies) and format (black and white graphic novel) interests you.

Favorite Quotes:
★ Tyreese ~ You guys could have been traveling cannibals for all I know.”
Rick ~ “What changed your mind?”
Tyreese ~ “The jury's still out.” (Page 14)
★ Rick ~ “I just don't know what anyone's thinking. To me, that's scarier than any half-rotten ghoul trying to eat my flesh.” (Page 14)
★ Allen ~ “You're not going to fix it. You're not going to make me feel better. I know you care. That's something. That's enough.” (Page 116)

Review: Killer Insight

KILLER INSIGHT by Victoria Laurie

The last time I'd been in close proximity to my parents, I'd actually considered taking up drinking as a recreational sport.

Date Read: June 19th 2012-June 20th 2012
Page Count: 278
Series: Psychic Eye Mystery - Book 4 of 10

My Thoughts:
When I started reading this book I immediately enjoyed being back in the circle of lovable characters, but as it went on I had a feeling that this book might disappoint me in the end. I thought the "who-dun-it" was going to take a crappy turn, but in reality it turned out to be very suspenseful and kept me guessing right up until the end. The story went up and down a bit for me, but overall I really enjoyed it, especially the end! I wish there was more Dutch, because his banter with Abby is always cute and funny, but, hopefully next book! I think this series is a great one, and I already have the next book on request from my library. As I've said before, I'd recommend this series completely. 5 stars!

Favorite Quotes:
★ Dave ~ “You got looks, brains, and superpowers. How could any guy resist all that?” (Page 23)
★ Abby ~ “Who taught you how to drive?”
Ellie ~ “My brother. Why?”
Abby ~ “I'm going to hunt him down and shoot him! Ellie, is your car registered as a lethal weapon?” (Page 31)
★ The last time I'd been in close proximity to my parents, I'd actually considered taking up drinking as a recreational sport. (Page 46)
★ Duffy ~ “I get to go first, huh?”
Abby ~ “Age before beauty.” (Page 126)
★ Duffy ~ “Why do women wear shoes that hurt their feet?”
Abby ~ “The same reason men splash on aftershave. It may hurt like a bitch, but there's no denying the opposite sex likes it.” (Page 137)
★ Duffy ~ “Man, when you open your mouth and insert your foot, you really shove it in up to the hip, don'tcha?” (Page 233)
★ Abby ~ “I feel like I've just had a giant espresso of love java.” (Page 260)

Review: Up Close and Dangerous

UP CLOSE AND DANGEROUS by Linda Howard

“A plain case of testosterone poisoning, if I've ever seen one.”
“Are you talking to me?”
“No, I'm talking to this tree, with about the same result.”

Date Read: June 16th 2012-June 18th 2012
Page Count: 327
Series: N/A

My Thoughts:
Every single Linda Howard book I've ever read has gotten a big 5 stars, and Up Close and Dangerous is no exception. She creates awesome characters you can connect to, and weaves them into the best romantic suspense storylines I've ever read. The romance she portrays is sweet, very sexy, and spot-on to what you'd hope for in the novel. The suspense is great, it makes you guess and always keeps you entertained. Bailey and Cam were really fun characters, you could relate to them, they were believable, and incredibly likeable. And their chemistry is what makes Linda Howard an amazing writer, nobody does romantic suspense like she does. I have nothing critical to say about Up Close and Dangerous. All of the Linda Howard books I've read I would highly recommend, they are all must-reads - 5 stars!

Cam ~ “I started second grade. I was older, more mature.” (Page 240)
★ Bailey ~ “You're a stubborn, mule-headed, macho idiot, and if you get dizzy and fall you'll probably break some bones even if the fall doesn't kill you outright, and I swear I'll leave you bleeding in the snow!”
Cam ~ “I love you, too.” (Page 243)
★ This was love. This was what people talked about, this painful, giddy, sorrowful, joyful, confusing explosion of emotion that didn't respond to reason. (Page 266)

Review: B is for Burglar

B IS FOR BURGLAR by Sue Grafton

“But I always heard handguns were so dangerous.”
“Of course, they're dangerous! That's the point. What do you want me to do? Go in there with a hunk of rolled-up newspaper?”

Date Read: June 15th 2012-June 16th 2012
Page Count: 186
Series: Kinsey Millhone - Book 2 of 22

My Thoughts:
I finally made my way to the second novel in the lengthy Kinsey Millhone series. I did enjoy this book, the main stand-out was the twist in the case, it was something I didn't expect and it made a great story. Kinsey wasn't quite as likeable as I would have hoped, she doesn't open herself up enough for you to get attached to her, no personal life, no joking around with friends, but she still was a decent character this time around. I'd really love some humor in this book, I think it would've really livened it up, Stephanie Plum style. :) The setting takes a minute to get used to, and it's kind of funny; by setting I mean that it's in the 80's and things are so different than they are now for a PI. No cell phones to trace or call for help with, no quick searches for leads on your laptop, etc. You definitely need to adjust your brain to it, it's interesting how much simple things in daily life have changed since the book was written. I bet Kinsey would have loved a cell phone and laptop at her disposal back then. :) B is for Burglar was a solid read that overall I enjoyed, and I'd like to read more of the series. 4 stars.

Favorite Quotes:
★ Mrs. Ochsner ~ “Insecure people have a special sensitivity for anything that finally confirms their own low opinion of themselves.” (Page 26)
★ Tillie ~ “But I always heard handguns were so dangerous.”
Kinsey ~ “Of course, they're dangerous! That's the point. What do you want me to do? Go in there with a hunk of rolled-up newspaper?” (Page 35)
★ I pulled into a fast-food restaurant, parked, and went in. I could have hollered my order into a clown's mouth and eaten in the car as I drove, but I wanted to show I had class. (Page 59)
★ The thing I've worried about for years is how dinosaurs mated, especially those great big spiny ones. (Page 81)
★ There's nothing more depressing than coming home at the end of a long day to a place that looks like it's just been tossed by the mob. (Page 93)
★ Jonah ~ “He said they hardly ever paid their rent, but every time he came to hassle them about it, they'd start humming and hold his hand, making significant eye contact.” (Page 94)
★ California has over three thousand homicide victims annually, and of those, fully two-thirds are slain by friends, acquaintances, or relatives, which makes you wonder if you might be better off as a friendless orphan in this state. (Page 98)
★ I ordered my standard breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs, toast, jelly, and orange juice, with coffee throughout. It's the only meal I'm consistently fond of as it contains every element I crave: caffeine, salt, sugar, cholesterol, and fat. How can one resist? In California, with all the health nuts around, the very act of eating such a meal is regarded as a suicide attempt. (Page 152)

Review: Amped

AMPED by Daniel H. Wilson

I'm only human, for now.

Date Read: June 11th 2012-June 13th 2012
Page Count: 274
Series: N/A

My Thoughts:
I thought this book would be an interesting read, and it was, but it didn't offer much else. It story and the writing itself both started out very intriguing but steadily declined into being a bit repetitive and slow. I didn't connect with the characters at all, and it was just lacking a bit overall. Nothing wowed me or made it rush to turn the pages. Most of the time I was hoping the characters would do something different, but they almost disappointed in their actions. I was left wanting something more. The idea of the Zenith is awesome though, and I liked reading the descriptions of him using it. But, I think the technology was the only strong point here. An okay read; 3 stars.

Favorite Quotes:
★ Samantha ~ “You're a dead man walking. How pathetic that you don't even know it.” (Page 12)
★ These days, there's no guessing what kind of mind lurks behind a face. (Page 65)
★ It's a fragile picture of normalcy, wavering in the reflection of a soap bubble. (Page 73)
★ Nick ~ “Every move you make is part of a bigger series. Whether you know it or not.” (Page 87)
★ Lyle ~ “There's one thing that regulars know deep down and it scares the shit out of 'em. Being an amp don't make you any less human, brother. Being an amp makes you more human.” (Page 103)
★ Now I understand what they see out there in the darkness—a war. (Page 111)
★ Lyle ~ “The world we knew ended and nobody told us.” (Page 113)
★ Lyle ~ “It means we're going to the stars together, stained in the blood of our enemies.” (Page 118)
★ Jim ~ “Things will go back to normal.”
Owen ~ “How can you believe that?”
Jim ~ “Because most people are good. But not when they're afraid.” (Page 138)
★ Jim ~ “We are sitting on gasoline-drenched kindling from sea to shining sea. You want to be the match that lights the fire?” (Page 139)
★ I'm only human, for now. (Page 178)
★ There is no pain, no urgency. There is only the Zenith. (Page 181)
★ Lyle ~ “They won't give us rights? We'll take them. We'll take everything we want.” (Page 186)
★ Owen ~ “I used the Zenith. All of it.”
Nick ~ “What's it like?”
Owen ~ “Like...being a ghost. Watching somebody else's life. Seeing events unfold precisely according to a plan that nobody told you.”
Nick ~ “Like destiny.” (Page 249)

Review: 1st to Die

1ST TO DIE by James Patterson

“Some of these bastards, you give them a penny for their thoughts, you know what you get?”
“Change.”

Date Read: June 9th 2012-June 10th 2012
Page Count: 424
Series: Women's Murder Club - Book 1 of 11

My Thoughts:
*Some spoilers ahead!*
Well, first let's get the negatives out of the way. The mini scene at the very beginning was totally unnecessary, was overly dramatic, and, to how I judged it, foreshadowed a characters death (no, not the obvious one, but the way it is written you can guess it correctly, which I did). Some other downfalls of the book are the majorly overused words of "Goddamn" and "Negli's" - I mean, he couldn't switch it up a bit? Instead of shoving the word Negli's in your face 30 times he could have said "sickness", "illness", etc, a few times to break it up. Also, the killer didn't make complete sense, I mean...how convincing could her "male voice" be?? But, now onto the positives. For the most part I did like the characters, I like how things didn't get too bogged down even though you were meeting lots of different characters. I loved Chris' character. Claire was funny. Lindsay was interesting. Wasn't too much with Jill though. Even the cops were characters I enjoyed reading about. Although it did have it's hokey moments, as a whole I did enjoy reading 1st to Die. It had drama, suspense, humor, and even some heartfelt moments. It was a very quick read, and I liked the writing. And I loved how it changed to the killer's point-of-view, and even to the victim's point-of-view, too! That was definitely a major plus. To sum it, some overused words got annoying, some overly dramatics parts were cheesy, the killer didn't seem to match up with all the facts they give, but the twist was interesting and overall I flipped through it pretty fast. I hated the first James Patterson I read (though I loved the movie!) so this one was a big step up from that one. I would recommend this overall, especially if you're already a Patterson fan. I probably will check out the next book in the series. :) 4 stars.

Favorite Quotes:
★ David ~ “A toast, to the second-luckiest man alive.”
Melanie ~ “The second? Who's the first?”
David ~ “This farmer with two goats. I'll tell you later.” (Page 8)
★ Claire ~ “I'm in shape. Round's a shape.” (Page 48)
★ Claire ~ “Some of these bastards, you give them a penny for their thoughts, you know what you get?”
Lindsay ~ “Change.” (Page 76)

Review: Demonglass

DEMONGLASS by Rachel Hawkins

“So why were you with her?”
“She was my assignment.”
“From The Eye?”
“No, from the Boy Scouts. That Witch Dating badge just kept eluding me.”
“Well, you must have at least three Total Douchebag badges by now, so that has to count for something.”

Date Read: June 7th 2012-June 8th 2012
Page Count: 359
Series: Hex Hall - Book 2 of 3

My Thoughts:
This was such a good book! And what a cliffhanger, ah! 5 stars doesn't do it justice. Demonglass was action-packed, had tons of romantic drama, loads of mystery and suspense, and, like I said, a crazy cliffhanger. I loved every page! I did predict the who-dun-it a bit early on, it was kind of obvious, if unexpected on the whole, though. Still, it was amazing cover to cover. I wish my library had the third book available, I'll be requesting it or buying it as soon as I can so I can finish up this must-read series! I highly recommend the Hex Hall books with their top-notch storylines and straight up awesome characters that keep you glued to every page. 5 big stars for Demonglass!

Daisy ~ “Because it houses an Itineris.”

★ It didn't seem fair that so much bad could happen in so short a time. Or maybe I was just using up all the horrible now. Maybe the next eighty years would be full of nothing but Yahtzee and collecting various cats. That might be nice. (Page 323/324)
★ Archer ~ “I wish I'd met you in a normal high school, and taken you on normal dates, and like, carried your books or something. Is that a thing humans actually do?”

Review: Intertwined

INTERTWINED by Gena Showalter

"You...fascinate me."

Date Read: June 3rd 2012-June 5th 2012
Page Count: 377
Series: Intertwined - Book 1 of 3

My Thoughts:
Such a great concept, but it didn't wow me at all. Aden and his "abilities" seems really cool, but it with the introduction of each new character it just went downhill. Apparently everyone he meets is some form of supernatural. It's just too much. Isn't anyone in that town just normal? It seems like the author is trying to overcompensate by making everyone have an ability rather than quality character depth. Lots, or rather most, of this book was very predictable. The whole Eve thing especially. Most of the main characters I didn't really care at all about, especially the ones that made such stupid (or spineless) decisions. Sigh. But, this book did have some interesting moments. I liked the "relationship" between Riley and Mary Ann when he was in wolf form, and still after he showed who he was and whatnot. But when something cool like that happened then something cheesy would be thrown in and ruin it at times. Another example of that would be the awesomeness of the 4 trapped souls Aden talks to, and the downfall being the obvious connection to Mary Ann, which later led to a pretty forced revelation that of course just happens at the perfect time and then gets cheesy. So, overall this is a 50/50 kind of book for me. It had so much potential, nearly all of that held in the solid character of Aden and his intriguing "situation" of having 4 souls trapped inside his head, but the author let it down, I think. I might read the next in the series, but only when my to-read pile is empty, no rush. 3 stars for Intertwined.

Favorite Quotes:
★ Caleb ~ We're about to smoke that fool! Is it bad that I'm hot right now? (Page 9)
★ He struck, in one fluid motion rendering the dead...dead. Again. (Page 18)
★ Mary Ann ~ Were my waffles sprinkled with crack? (Page 74) ★ Caleb would have said she was heaven and hell wrapped in the same pretty package. A friend and a foe. Both a hunter and the prey. (Page 85)
★ Victoria ~ “You...fascinate me. That was stupid of me to say. Pretend I said something else.”
Aden ~ “I can't.” (Page 111/112)
★ Mary Ann ~ “Now you sound like my dad.”
Aden ~ “Well, then, he's clearly a genius.” (Page 180)
★ Riley ~ “My advice is to avoid capture.”
Aden ~ “Oh, really? 'Cause I never would have thought of that on my own.” (Page 293)

Review: A Vision of Murder

A VISION OF MURDER by Victoria Laurie

"I mean, the only thing I know about ghost busters is what I learned from Bill Murray."

Date Read: June 1st 2012-June 2nd 2012
Page Count: 296
Series: Psychic Eye Mystery - Book 3 of 10

My Thoughts:
This book was a good read, but not great. It was definitely the weakest of the series thus far, and I hate to not be able to give a book from this fun series a full 5 stars. The case was wishy-washy, the romantic fell flat (so much lead up in the last 2 books about what was to happen just to gloss over the steamy romance this time around?), and everything else was just good. Not great, not awesome. I hope the series doesn't go downhill from here, but I've already requested book 4 and I'm hoping for the best. 4 stars for A Vision of Murder.
